I remember Mama: The anniversary of her passing
It has been a year since my grandmother passed away. Last night I dreamt that I was was standing in her house on Washington Drive. It was the house before we remodeled. Almost everyone was at the house, including my mom and my grandfather and I think my siblings. Everyone was getting ready to go out and enjoy the day. My grandmother was in the middle of her kitchen next to her old island where she use to make tortillas. This day she was dressed and ready to go out and non-patiently sitting in a wheelchair waiting for everyone else.
At first sight, her back is towards me and I can see her short little legs, beautiful white curly hair and her hands, her unforgettable hands. I watch her for a little bit. And she waits for a time when everyone is out of the room, or at least she thinks we're not watching her. She grabs on to the edge of the kitchen island, steadying her legs and pulls herself up from her wheelchair like she used to do.
She hears this song Amapola Amapola on the radio in the background. I come up behind her slowly not to scare her. I think I even give a little cough to announce myself in the room and I slide my hand across her back as if I'm about to dance with her but also to help her steady her balance.
I asked with just a nod of the head, 'Shall we dance can I dance with you?'
She falls into my arms like she used to when he would start dancing in her kitchen. And we slowly dance back and forth, shuffling our feet towards the dining room, back down her dining room, holding each other very tightly while the music is playing. And then the song ends and i wake up.
Tears everywhere.
Amapola, lindisima amapola,Será siempre mi alma tuya sola.
Yo te quiero, amada niña mia,
Iqual que ama la flor la luz del día.
Amapola, lindisima amapola,
No seas tan ingrate y ámame.
Amapola, amapola
Cómo puedes tú vivir tan sola.
Yo te quiero, amada niña mía.
Yo te quiero, amada niña mía.
Igual que ama la flor la luz del día. Amapola, lindísima amapola,
No seas tan ingrate y ámame.
Amapola, amapola
Cómo puedes tú vivir tan sola.

Poppy, pretty little poppy
Poppy, pretty little poppy
My soul will always be only yours
I love you, my dear girl,
As the flower loves day's light.
Poppy, pretty little poppy,
Don't be so hard and love me.
Poppy, poppy
I love you, my dear girl.
How can you live so alone.
The same as the flower loves day's light.
The same as the flower loves day's light.
Poppy, pretty little poppy,
Poppy, pretty little poppy,
Don't be so hard and love me.
