Vintage Faith Church
Celebrates 4th Annual
“Stations of the Cross” Public Art Exhibit
in Downtown Santa Cruz

Local church uses art to explore the themes of Easter in a new way

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. April 6 and 7 – Vintage Faith Church announced today that it is hosting its fourth annual “Stations of the Cross” art exhibit in downtown Santa Cruz. The public exhibition, which will feature work by emerging and established visual artists in the Santa Cruz community, will be on display on Pacific Avenue (across from the Santa Cruz Cinema 9, in downtown Santa Cruz) on Friday & Saturday April 6 and 7 from 11:00AM to 7:00 PM both days.

The Vintage Faith Easter weekend events will culminate with three Sunday morning services at the First Presbyterian Church, 350 Mission Street, featuring a live band, choir, teaching from the Bible and an indoor art exhibition at their new coffeehouse.

Artists of all backgrounds have responded to our invitation and submitted proposals for the creation of one of the 13 stations, which bring the ancient/historical events of Easter into a present day public discourse. The goal of the exhibit is to draw artists from a variety of faith backgrounds into a visual dialogue with this historic narrative, encouraging them to interpret modern day issues through this lens.
“We are not trying to duplicate the Catholic concept of an annual pilgrimage through Jesus' journey to the cross, but rather are using the traditional stations as a vehicle for engaging the public in the larger story of faith and humanity,” stated Cheryl Isaacson, Exhibit Director. “It is our goal that this exhibit will become a much anticipated Santa Cruz tradition known for fresh and powerful contemporary art.” This year's exhibition will reflect that goal once more, highlighting a wide range of work from painting and sculpture to video installation and live art. An especially exciting addition is the live creation of a large-scale textile work during the event. A dozen or more knitters and textile artists will be working on the street for the duration of the exhibit and should provide an engaging experience for those who stop to view the work.

While the traditional practice of walking the Stations of the Cross is primarily designed for devoted followers of Jesus, Vintage Faith’s approach has been to establish an exhibit that is truly public art with a much broader purpose. As people from varying walks of life with varying views of God take in the show, it is the goal of the faith community that everyone will identify with some aspect of the message.

ABOUT VINTAGE FAITH CHURCH

Founded in February 2004, Vintage Faith is a church in Santa Cruz seeking a fresh approach to Christian spirituality and the teachings of Jesus. We desire to rethink church and be focusing on the teachings of Jesus in a way that fits the culture and people of Santa Cruz County. We are using art and new innovative expressions of worship in our weekly larger gatherings. We also are building the church through forming smaller communities who meet mid-week in homes, but then all meet together on Sunday for community worship. Currently, there are 500 people coming to the two Sunday worship gatherings, which meet at 11:00Am and 7:00PM at the First Presbyterian church. Easter Sunday morning, we are switching to meeting three times at the First Presbyterian Church on 350 Mission Street, at 9:00AM, 10:00AM, and 11:00AM.
